Food Standards Australia New Zealand today invited submissions on whether to allow pet dogs in outdoor areas of eating establishments

FSANZ Chief Executive Officer, Steve McCutcheon said the Food Standards Code currently doesn’t allow animals, except guide dogs, in areas where food is handled.

“ However a number of jurisdictions have specifically regulated to allow pet dogs in outdoor dining areas, resulting in an inconsistent approach across Australia,” Mr McCutcheon said.

“While the proposal aims to provide a consistent approach nationally, businesses will retain the right to have the final say in whether pet dogs are allowed on their premises.

“A FSANZ risk assessment has found that the risk of foodborne transmission of disease from pet dogs in outdoor settings to humans is very low to negligible.”

The closing date for submissions on the proposal is 13 June 2012.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved a proposal to extend country of origin labelling to unpackaged beef, sheep and chicken meat.

FSANZ Chief Executive Officer Steve McCutcheon said the decision had been notified to food regulation ministers who had 60 days to seek a review. If no review is sought the decision is gazetted and becomes part of food law in Australian states and territories. There is a six month implementation period once the change is gazetted.

Mr McCutcheon said the Australian Government had asked FSANZ to address an inconsistency in country of origin labelling requirements for unpackaged meat after a change in rules for beef imports was made in 2010.

Food regulation ministers also asked FSANZ to continue this work in response to one of the recommendations of an independent review of food labelling headed by Dr Neal Blewett.

“Research indicates country of origin information is important to consumers and is valued more in fresh food products such as fresh meat than other food categories,” Mr McCutcheon said.

“Mandating additional country of origin labelling requirements will ensure consumers are provided with access to this information consistently across the retail sector.”

Mr McCutcheon said the cost of the change to industry is not expected to be great as many retailers already label products voluntarily.

Australia currently exports far more meat than it imports. In recent years, beef imports have accounted for around 0.5% (imported from New Zealand and Vanuatu) of beef consumption, while sheep imports accounted for 0.2% of Australia sheep meat consumption. Australia does not import any fresh chicken meat because of quarantine restrictions.

Decision made on country of origin labelling for unpackaged meat Salamanda Food

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved a proposal recommending permission be given for the sale in Australia of raw milk hard to very hard cooked curd cheeses.

FSANZ Chief Executive Officer Steve McCutcheon said the decision had been notified to food regulation ministers who have 60 days to seek a review. If ministers do not ask for a review the decision will be gazetted and become part of food law in Australian states and territories.

Mr McCutcheon said Proposal 1007 had looked at whether or not permission should be given for raw milk (non-pasteurised) products to be sold in Australia.

“During assessment, FSANZ looked at the production and processing measures and product characteristics needed to provide a high level of safety for consumers,” Mr McCutcheon said.

“The permission for non-pasteurised hard to very hard cooked curd cheeses will involve changes to the Food Standards Code relating to storage time and moisture content requirements.”

Mr McCutcheon said FSANZ was looking at permissions for other raw milk cheeses through a new proposal that will use technical work already completed through P1007.

“Other raw milk cheeses are being considered separately because a wider range of processing measures and product characteristics need to be considered.

“FSANZ has concluded that raw drinking milk presents too high a risk to consider any permission in the Code.”
